Canadian Federal Assistance

Before applying for funding under provincial programs, we highly recommend exploring the federal financial assistance available to Canadian citizens. The following are some of the benefits available:

1. Canada Child Tax Benefit

A tax-free monthly payment available to assist families with the cost of raising their children. Available for families with children up to the age of 18 years.

2. Child Disability Benefit/Credit (subset of Canada Child Tax Benefit)

A tax-free benefit for families who care for a child under age 18 with a severe and prolonged impairment in mental or physical functions. A family may qualify for up to $2504.00 per year ($208.66 per month) to cover the cost of raising a who has a disability. A qualified practitioner must complete the “Disability Tax Credit Certificate” (T2201). Qualified practitioners include: medical doctors, optometrists, audiologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, and speech- language pathologists. If the child qualifies for this credit, they will automatically be eligible for the monthly allowance. The benefit is added to the monthly Child Tax Credit or if applicable, the Child Special Allowance which is also paid on a monthly basis.

3. Child Tax Credit

The CCTB (above) includes a basic benefit, a National Child Benefit Supplement (NCBS) and a Child Disability Benefit (CDB). Families can claim a non-refundable tax credit of $2000.00. This is applicable for all children under 18 years of age.

4. Children's Special Allowance

A tax-free monthly payment from the federal government to provincial or territorial agencies, institutions and foster parents who are responsible for the care and education of children who are: under the age of 18; physically reside in Canada; and are maintained by an agency.
